At approximately 2:30 a.m., on August 17, 2026 crews responded to a reported residential structure fire in the City of Oak Ridge North, with initial information indicating that occupants were still inside the home.
While the fire was unfolding, 5-year-old Ava and 9-year old Mia showed incredible bravery and quick thinking. They awoke and saw their neighbors’ house on fire. They immediately alerted their mother, who in turn alerted the neighbors, giving the family precious time to escape the home safely. Because of their courage and quick actions, the occupants were able to get out.
When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy fire conditions coming from the garage and immediately initiated an offensive attack. Crews quickly worked to extinguish the fire in the garage and in multiple vehicles involved. Thankfully, no injuries were reported.
Our crews performed exceptionally well under challenging conditions, rapidly bringing the fire under control and helping ensure everyone’s safety.
We are especially proud to recognize Ava and Mia for their bravery, awareness, and quick thinking. At just 5 and 9 years old, their actions made a tremendous difference and serve as an important reminder of why knowing what to do when you see or hear signs of a fire can save lives.
